Why Walk?

Walking is an easy, free and enjoyable form of exercise and is better than no exercise at all. Many can do it no matter where you live.

Some of the Benefits of Walking are -

  • Lower body mass index (BMI). ...

  • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol. ...

  • Lower fasting blood sugar (glucose). ...

  • Better memory and cognitive function. ...

  • Lower stress and improved mood. ...

  • Longer life.

  • Lowers blood pressure

It is recommended to walk 15 to 30 minutes per day and for those who work from a desk all day are urged to walk more. Many fitness trackers give us a goal of 10,000 steps per day which equates to about five miles a day,

Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance. It can also reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers.

Walking is underrated and many feel they can't get a good workout from it. Changing your stride or your speed also can boost stamina, give your heart a cardiovascular workout and so much more.

Brian and I walk each night, we walk from our home to the barn 1/2 a mile down the road, do our farm chores and then walk home. For us this also includes some evenings of carrying things like, a book back to my office, the garbage to the dumpster or picking up trash along the road way. It provides us with some changes in our "just a walk" evening. It gives us some resistance or bending and stretching movement.

I would urge each of you to make walking a part of your daily routine. Plus, I challenge you to see how much this helps in your emotional and mental health during these stressful times.
